Officials question hundreds of millions in untracked Ebola aid as outbreak spreads to eighth province
Africa CDC and Congolese officials say most of the $962 million pledged for Ebola response in eastern Congo lacks clear accounting, while the outbreak reaches an eighth province.
Since the start of the Ebola emergency in eastern Congo, donors have disbursed $962 million, but Africa CDC says only $200 million has been traced to implementing organisations. Of the few groups that submitted financial statements, $127 million has been spent and roughly $100 million remains unspent. The agency criticised the lack of transparency and pledged to work with Congolese authorities to investigate the missing funds.
Congo's health ministry has narrowed operational licences to 25 of nearly 100 previously authorised NGOs, requiring them to disclose all received monies and spending plans. The outbreak, driven by the Bundibugyo virus, has now reached an eighth province and spilled over into Kenya and Uganda, with at least 9,400 infections and over 4,500 fatalities recorded, straining response efforts.
