Offshore Tropical Storm Marie drives record humidity and heat warnings across Los Angeles County
Tropical Storm Marie, though far offshore, will bring extreme humidity, heat and dangerous surf to Los Angeles County this week.
A distant Tropical Storm Marie is expected to influence weather over Los Angeles County, delivering unusually humid and hot conditions through the week. National Weather Service meteorologists explain that the storm’s moisture, together with a building high-pressure ridge, will drive daytime highs into the 90s and, in the western San Fernando Valley and Woodland Hills, up to 105 degrees, while humidity may reach some of the highest levels on record for the region.
Heat advisories have been issued for coastal valleys, beaches, and nearby mountain areas, and will expand to Ventura, Santa Clarina, Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties by Wednesday. The combination of high surf, elevated tides—up to 7.2 feet—and strong onshore winds creates dangerous rip currents, prompting officials to advise against swimming, especially for weak swimmers. Public health officials also warn of possible bacterial spikes in the ocean after recent rains. Residents are urged to stay hydrated, use cooling centers, and monitor forecasts.
Why it matters
