Ohio couple faces additional child sex abuse charges linked to relative after ‘house of horrors’ raid

A Vinton County jury added child sex abuse counts against Gary Siders Jr. and Elizabeth Siders after investigators uncovered alleged abuse of a young relative during the raid on their squalid home.

On Friday a Vinton County grand jury returned new indictments against Gary Siders Jr., 37, and his wife Elizabeth Siders, 33, adding two counts of third-degree sexual battery and a third-degree felony for unlawful sexual conduct with a minor. The alleged victim is a young relative, not an immediate family member, who was reportedly abused between January and September 2022. These charges emerged after investigators requested Gary’s DNA for an unrelated child-sex case, prompting a search warrant that uncovered the squalid “house of horrors” on Ohmer Street in Hamden, where 16 children aged 18 months to 18 years were being held.

The couple already faces 19 child-endangerment counts, while their parents, Christina Siders and Gary Siders Sr., also face multiple endangerment charges. Ohio Attorney General Andy Wilson said the investigation, conducted with the Bureau of Criminal Investigation and the Vinton County Sheriff’s Office, is ongoing. Defense counsel has raised concerns about Elizabeth’s mental health and her competency to assist in her defense.

Why it matters

The case underscores extreme child endangerment and sexual abuse, prompting scrutiny of child protection systems in Ohio.
