Ohio lawmakers decry fatal crash involving undocumented driver and call for stricter licensing

Over the holiday weekend, a collision on Route 22 in Fairfield County resulted in the death of 23-year-old Cameron Lyon of Caledonia, Ohio. Sheriff Alex Lape identified the driver as 33-year-old Alvaro Uribe-Gonzalez, an undocumented immigrant, and reported that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has been contacted while the crash remains under investigation. The Ohio State Highway Patrol said Uribe-Gonzalez entered the westbound lane, striking Lyon's car, with alcohol suspected as a contributing factor.

He is charged with aggravated vehicular homicide, driving under the influence and operating a vehicle without a valid license. State senators Bernie Moreno and Jon Husted publicly condemned the incident on X, linking it to broader concerns about undocumented drivers and the lack of “drive-only” licenses in Ohio. Moreno referenced a prior crash that killed Austin J. Karr Grimes and criticized Connecticut’s policy of issuing such licenses to undocumented residents.
