Ohio Man Convicted of Murdering Deputy After Viewing Son’s Fatal Shooting Video

Rodney L. Hinton was found guilty of murder for killing Special Deputy Larry Henderson after watching body-camera footage of his son Ryan’s police shooting.

A Cincinnati jury delivered a murder conviction to Rodney L. Hinton for the May 2025 incident that resulted in the death of Hamilton County Special Deputy Larry Henderson. Hours before the crash, Hinton was called to a police station to watch body-camera footage of his son Ryan Hinton being fatally shot by a Cincinnati officer after a stolen-vehicle chase. The defense highlighted Hinton’s past mental-health struggles and asked for an insanity acquittal, while prosecutors contended he intentionally accelerated his vehicle, reaching over 43 mph and striking the deputy who had stepped aside.

Witnesses included Henderson’s grieving wife, Lori Henderson, who recalled his last words before work. The trial featured expert testimony on Hinton’s state of mind, and the judge scheduled sentencing for November 16.

Why it matters

The verdict highlights the intersection of personal trauma, violent crime, and the challenges of insanity defenses in the justice system.
