Ohio moves to curb fee-charging “claim sharks” targeting veterans

Ohio officials have introduced House Bill 708 to regulate for-profit firms that assist veterans with VA disability claims, many of which charge fees far exceeding the benefits earned. The legislation would set a $5 ceiling on fees for obtaining discharge records, mandate written disclosures about free county services, and require contractors to identify themselves as unaccredited. Critics argue the bill does not impose sufficient penalties and could restrict veterans’ ability to choose paid assistance.

Supporters, including Rep. Steve Demetriou, say the bill adds needed guardrails against misleading practices. Private attorney Victoria Collier, whose firm is unaccredited but operates within current rules, fears the bill may hamper legitimate services. The proposal remains in a House committee and has not advanced since its introduction.
