Ohio shuts 93-year-old Brookpark Road bridge after new analysis reveals severe beam decay

The 93-year-old Brookpark Road bridge in Cleveland, also known as the State Route 17 bridge, was closed on an emergency basis after a recent structural analysis uncovered severe deterioration of its floor beams. The Ohio Department of Transportation, which had been preparing a large-scale rehabilitation project originally scheduled for 2028, said the new findings made continued use of the bridge unsafe. The bridge spans Valley Parkway and the Cleveland Metroparks, linking West 220th Street with NASA Parkway near Cleveland Hopkins International Airport.
ODOT public information officer Brent Kovacs explained that alternatives such as load limits or lane reductions were considered, but a full closure was deemed the safest option. Motorists are now required to follow detours that route eastbound traffic via Clague Road to I-480 east and westbound traffic through Grayton Road to I-480 west. The agency will spend the next weeks evaluating whether to fast-track the rehabilitation or apply a temporary repair, but no timeline for reopening has been provided.
