Ohio Supreme Court denies Mackenzie Shirilla's final request to reopen case

The Ohio Supreme Court has once again turned down Mackenzie Shirilla's attempt to have her conviction revisited, issuing a formal denial of her motion for reconsideration. The order, authored by Chief Justice Sharon L. Kennedy, follows a prior June ruling that rejected her post-conviction appeal on jurisdictional grounds. Shirilla, who was convicted in August 2023 of four felonious assault counts and two aggravated vehicular homicide counts for the July 2022 crash that killed her boyfriend Dominic Russo and friend Davion Flanagan, is serving a sentence of life imprisonment with parole eligibility after 15 years.

Her legal team filed the latest request on July 6, but the court affirmed that the petition was untimely. Shirilla continues to be held at the Ohio Reformatory for Women, where she gained notoriety for a selfie taken behind bars. Her first parole hearing is scheduled for 2037, when she will be 33 years old.
