Ohio urges voters to flag AI chatbot errors on election info ahead of midterms
The Ohio Secretary of State has asked voters to submit screenshots when AI tools like ChatGPT, Claude or Grok give incorrect election details, launching the call a week before the midterm elections.
Ahead of the upcoming midterm elections, Ohio’s Secretary of State, Frank LaRose, launched a program asking voters to capture and forward screenshots whenever AI chatbots such as ChatGPT, Claude or Grok provide inaccurate election guidance. Participants are instructed to include the original question, the complete AI answer and the name of the platform, and can submit these via direct messages on X, Facebook, Instagram or by email.
The state’s cybersecurity and technology divisions will use the collected data to identify recurring errors and work with AI providers to ensure official election facts are correctly reflected. This effort expands on Ohio’s use of its own Election Virtual Assistant (EVA), which helps all 88 county boards access information grounded in the Election Official Manual and calendar. LaRose emphasized that while AI can be helpful, voters should always verify polling locations, hours and deadlines through official sources like VoteOhio.gov. The program aims to keep election information reliable as more citizens turn to AI for everyday queries.
Why it matters
Ensuring AI does not spread false voting details helps protect the integrity of Ohio's upcoming elections.
