Oklahoma man charged with murder after explosion kills two at cannabis extraction plant

An explosion at the Solos Extracts cannabis extraction facility in an industrial park near Tulsa killed employees Michael Newman and Stephen Scott and caused extensive damage to the structure and surrounding businesses. Prosecutors allege the workers were illegally producing hazardous chemicals that led to the blast. Owner Ryan Bassham, who acquired the business earlier this year, surrendered to police, faced two counts of first-degree murder and was released after posting a $2 million bond.

A fire marshal’s earlier inspection had found an obsolete fire suppression system, and after the explosion large quantities of liquid propane and other hazardous material were discovered on site. The Tulsa County district attorney’s office said the business was seeking updated marijuana licensing and narcotics registration at the time of the incident.
