Oktoberfest beer prices soar to five times 1985 level as costs rise
This year’s Oktoberfest charges €15.61 for a liter of beer, about five times the €3.20 price in 1985, while overall German consumer prices have risen far less.
Munich’s Oktoberfest begins Saturday as mayor Dominik Krause ceremonially taps the inaugural keg, welcoming millions of guests from around the world. Attendees will drink beer from traditional one-liter Mass mugs, many dressed in Bavarian lederhosen and dirndls. This year’s average price of €15.61 per liter represents roughly a fivefold jump from the €3.20 average in 1985.
While German consumer prices have risen modestly and are projected to increase about 3%, the festival’s beer price growth is markedly higher. Andreas Rees, the German chief economist at UniCredit, calculates the disparity and suggests the so-called “beer inflation” may be approaching its limit, though he admits certainty is lacking. The steep price hike adds to ongoing debates about affordability at the world’s largest beer celebration.
