Oliver Gilbert clinches Democratic nod for Florida's 24th District as Jones concedes
Miami-Dade Commissioner Oliver Gilbert III won the Democratic primary for Florida’s 24th Congressional District, while State Senator Shevrin Jones acknowledged defeat.
Oliver Gilbert III, a Miami-Dade County commissioner, secured the Democratic nomination for the open 24th Congressional District seat in Florida, according to election projections. He prevailed over six other Democratic contenders, among them State Senator Shevrin Jones, former U.S. Rep. Kendrick Meek, former commissioner Jean Monestime, physician-veteran Rudolph Moise, Marshall L. Davis Sr., and Roderick Vereen, finishing about two percentage points ahead.
Jones conceded the race on Tuesday night after falling behind Gilbert. The heavily Democratic district, which includes neighborhoods such as Miami Gardens, Opa-Locka, North Miami, Little Haiti, Brownsville, West Park, Pembroke Park and parts of Miramar, will pit Gilbert against Republican T.E. Brown in the November general election.
Gilbert, who received an endorsement from longtime Rep. Frederica Wilson, emphasized his experience in local governance as preparation for Congress. He identified affordability as a top concern for voters and outlined proposals to lower the Medicare eligibility age and raise Medicaid income thresholds.
