Oliver Solberg falls short in dramatic final WRC round on Sardinia

Oliver Solberg was unable to clinch the season-ending rally in Sardinia, losing the title battle to Elfyn Evans after a tense finale.

In the final rally of the 2026 World Rally Championship, held on the Italian island of Sardinia, Oliver Solberg failed to secure the win that could have crowned him champion, with Elfyn Evans maintaining his lead after scoring in the penultimate event. Solberg's season featured a Monte Carlo triumph, a Chile victory, and several podiums, but also mixed results such as a DNF in the Canary Islands and lower finishes in Kenya and Croatia.

The Sardinia round marked the end of one outlet calendar, with the next season set to replace it with Rally Roma. Off the stages, Solberg disclosed that his fiancée, British national Chloe Chambers, has not yet received a Swedish residence permit, adding personal strain to his campaign. Former rally champion Petter Solberg recalled his son's strong performances throughout the year, noting the dramatic conclusion to the season.

Why it matters

The outcome decides the 2026 WRC champion and reflects the pressures on a rising star both on and off the rally stages.
