Olkiluoto 3 maintenance pause extended beyond original schedule

The upkeep shutdown of Olkiluoto 3, Finland's largest nuclear unit owned by TVO, will last longer than initially projected.

TVO reported that the scheduled maintenance shutdown of Olkiluoto 3, Finland's biggest nuclear power plant, has been prolonged beyond the previously expected timeline of about 50 days ending in late October. The new timetable pushes completion to early November, according to the company's maintenance chief. The extension results from inspection findings that some valves exhibited significant wear, requiring thorough refurbishment.

TVO emphasized that the extensive effort is intended to guarantee the plant's safety and quality for the upcoming operating period. The plant had previously set a record of continuous operation for 498 days, and TVO remains confident the revised schedule will be met without further postponements.

Why it matters

Extended downtime at Finland's key nuclear plant could affect regional power supply and energy planning.
