Olympic Canoeist’s Lawyers Demand DOJ and Interior Probe of Arrest and Dismissal
Attorneys for Olympic canoeist David Hearn have asked the Justice and Interior Departments' inspectors general to examine the circumstances of his arrest, indictment and the subsequent dismissal of the case.
Olympic canoeist David Hearn was briefly jailed in June after National Park Police asked him to remove his hand from a loosened section of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool liner. His attorneys contend he was never read his Miranda rights and only learned of misdemeanor citations after release. A grand jury later issued a felony indictment, which U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro dismissed in July, citing delayed Interior Department evidence and a contractor-related installation error.
Hearn’s lawyers allege that Pirro, Interior Secretary Doug Burgum and President Donald Trump exerted political pressure, resulting in an unjust prosecution. They have now written to the DOJ Inspector General Don Berthiaume and the DOI Inspector General Caryl Brzymialkiewicz, demanding a comprehensive review of agency actions, evidence handling, and alleged violations of professional conduct. The request also highlights concerns that the case could be revived despite a judge’s order barring further prosecution.
Why it matters
The case raises questions about possible political interference and misconduct within federal law-enforcement agencies.
How the sides frame it
MODERATE AGREEMENTAll camps note the attorneys’ request for watchdog investigations, but left-leaning coverage stresses alleged political pressure from Trump and officials, centrist coverage stresses the wrongful nature of the accusation and calls for a detailed probe, while right-leaning coverage ties the case to the botched pool liner installation and Trump’s public statements.
LEFT
The story is framed as a politically driven injustice, alleging that Trump, the U.S. Attorney and the Interior Secretary pressured the case, resulting in a wrongful prosecution.
CENTER
The coverage frames the case as a false accusation against the ex-Olympian, emphasizing the need for a thorough watchdog investigation into the mishandling by DOJ and Interior.
