Olympic champion Nancy Hogshead urges WNBA to define eligibility as biological women

Olympic gold-medalist Nancy Hogshead has filed a Change.org petition calling on the WNBA to explicitly limit player eligibility to biological females. Since its August 14 launch, the petition has attracted more than 11,000 supporters, with Hogshead targeting 100,000 signatures. She points to the league’s 2026 collective bargaining agreement, which mentions only that "players who are women" may compete, but does not define "woman" or address gender identity.

The issue resurfaced after former NBA players Enes Kanter Freedom and Royce White announced intentions to enter the 2027 WNBA Draft while identifying as women, a move the league labeled a publicity stunt and deemed ineligible. WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert said the league is discussing the matter with the players’ union and rejected “bad-faith efforts” to marginalize anyone. Hogshead also praised Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham for her stance against transgender participation in women’s sports, noting growing public backing. Hogshead, a 1984 Olympic champion, now works as a civil-rights attorney and leads the advocacy group Champion Women.
