Omega-3 and low-dose aspirin match antibiotics in severe gum disease trial
A year-long study found that a regimen of omega-3 fatty acids combined with low-dose aspirin achieved clinical outcomes comparable to standard antibiotic therapy in patients with advanced periodontitis.
In a multicenter, double-blind trial, 109 patients with advanced gum disease were randomly allocated to receive scaling plus either placebo, a metronidazole-amoxicillin course, daily omega-3 supplements with low-dose aspirin for six months, or a combination of both regimens. Clinical assessments at three, six and twelve months showed that the antibiotic and the omega-3/aspirin arms each succeeded in achieving the study’s endpoint—no more than four deep periodontal pockets—in about 58% of cases, far surpassing the 23% success rate of the placebo arm.
Adding antibiotics to the omega-3/aspirin protocol did not improve outcomes. The investigators suggest that modulating inflammation with omega-3 and aspirin could provide an alternative for patients who cannot use antibiotics, potentially helping to curb antibiotic resistance. Longer-term follow-up indicated that benefits persisted six months after stopping supplementation. Further research is needed to confirm these findings across broader populations and to understand the microbial changes underlying the treatment effects.
