One dead, three still missing after cabin cruiser capsizes near Alcatraz
A 50-foot cabin cruiser sank in San Francisco Bay near Alcatraz, leaving one fatality and three people unaccounted for.
Around 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, the 50-foot cabin cruiser Volare capsized in the waters between the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz Island, prompting a multi-agency response that included the San Francisco Fire Department, the U.S. Coast Guard, Oakland Police marine units and private vessels. Officials said the boat left the St. Francis Yacht Club with roughly 20 adult passengers, most of whom were family members attending a memorial service.
Thirteen passengers were safely brought ashore, three were treated for injuries sustained from jumping into the water, and one man died after resuscitation efforts. Three individuals are still missing, and search operations with eleven vessels will continue through the night. A family reunification center has been set up at Fort Mason, and the mayor urged the community to stay informed about the ongoing rescue effort.
