One in Ten Welsh Households Live Within a Kilometre of High-Risk Coal Tips
A new report finds that about one in ten homes in Wales are situated within a kilometre of coal tips classified as high risk, a danger amplified by climate-related extreme weather.
Marking the 60th anniversary of the Aberfan tragedy, a climate-change group has highlighted that roughly one in ten Welsh homes lie within a kilometre of coal tips rated as high risk. Their findings indicate that more than 130,000 households face this exposure, with the number of Category C and D tips rising slightly in the past year. Experts warn that intensified rain and warmer conditions are making these historic waste piles increasingly unstable.
Homeowners near the most dangerous tips are paying as much as 40% higher insurance premiums compared with the national median. While the Welsh Government is working to mitigate the most acute safety concerns, advocates argue that stronger political measures are needed to prevent another disaster and to address the broader costs to communities.
Why it matters
Thousands of Welsh families face heightened safety and financial risks from aging coal tips made more unstable by climate change.
