One killed and two critically wounded in shooting at Kearns funeral

Unified Police officers were dispatched to a funeral at a Kearns church after attendees warned of a possible issue, arriving around 11:25 a.m. Shortly after, gunshots rang out on the south side of the sanctuary, resulting in one fatality and two critically injured victims who were transported to a nearby hospital. A suspect group attempted to leave the scene but was intercepted and contained by police. The incident prompted three local schools—Kearns Jr. High, West Kearns Elementary and Gourley Elementary—to activate a secure protocol, locking exterior doors and restricting entry and exit.
The precautionary measure was lifted just under an hour later. This shooting marks a violent disruption of a community mourning event.
