Online passport applications to launch via AI-powered America.gov portal next year

At a cabinet-level event, Secretary of State Marco Rubio introduced an AI-enhanced portal on America.gov that will allow first-time passport applicants to complete the entire process online. The service will guide users through a chat-style interface where they can ask how to apply, upload a passport-style photo, view a mock-up of the document and submit payment. This replaces one outlet requirement to fill out a form, print it, gather citizenship proof and photo ID, and appear at a passport acceptance facility.

The feature is expected to go live next year as part of a broader modernization of federal service delivery. Joe Gebbia, chief design officer of the United States, characterized the platform as a conversational concierge for navigating government. Rubio emphasized that the change aims to give citizens a more convenient and efficient way to obtain passports.
