Online Sportsbooks Funnel Nearly $500K into Kansas Primaries to Influence State Spending

Online betting firms have spent almost $500,000 on Kansas primary races through the American Conservative Fund, aiming to protect their financial interests in the state.

Kansas’s constitution bans gambling, yet a 2022 statute permitted online sports betting to run through state-owned lotteries, tying industry profits to public finances. Major operators—including DraftKings, FanDuel, Fanatics and Bet365—have funneled nearly $500,000 into the state’s primary elections via one outlet Fund, a Super PAC financed by the Win For America PAC. This outlay eclipses typical campaign totals and is aimed at preserving the flow of lottery revenue, 80 % of which currently supports the Attracting Professional Sports to Kansas Fund and a $2 billion stadium project for the Kansas City Chiefs.

Lawmakers opposed a budget provision that would let the legislature audit lottery spending, fearing cuts to the sports-related allocations that benefit the betting firms. After that provision failed, the gambling companies launched an aggressive financing push ahead of the 2026 midterms, backing candidates in races where contributions reach six-figure levels, often covering all advertising costs. Critics note the Super PAC’s public platform stresses generic conservative values while its backers also fund Democratic candidates through the American Future PAC, masking the true policy agenda.
