Onosato Takes Solo Lead at Autumn Grand Sumo After Kotozakura Falls
Yokozuna Onosato moved into sole first place at the Autumn Grand Sumo Tournament after ozeki Kotozakura recorded his second defeat.
At Ryogoku Kokugikan on Day 8, yokozuna Onosato secured a 7-1 record, gaining an outright lead in the Autumn Grand Sumo Tournament as the only active yokozuna after Hoshoryu remained sidelined. Ozeki Kotozakura suffered his second loss of the meet, falling to 6-2 after a defeat by komusubi Hakunofuji, who emphasized keeping distance to avoid chest-to-chest clashes. Kirishima, a Mongolian-born ozeki eyeing promotion, dropped to 5-3 when maegashira Churanoumi turned the bout in his favor.
Onosato showed little sign of a lingering left-shoulder injury while dispatching former sekiwake Takanosho. Ukrainian ozeki Aonishiki rose to 5-3 with a win over komusubi Daieisho, and sekiwake Atamifuji stayed in contention at 6-2 after defeating maegashira Kotoeiho.
