Ontario fines StubHub $20,000 for breaching new ticket-price cap, company vows appeal
The Ontario government imposed a $20,000 penalty on StubHub for two alleged violations of the province’s 2026 ticket-price ceiling, and StubHub says it will contest the fine.
Ontario’s 2026 budget created a law that prohibits any ticket resale above the original face price, aiming to keep events affordable. The province’s Consumer Beware List now shows StubHub fined $20,000 for two alleged breaches of this rule. StubHub’s spokesperson said the company disagrees with the penalty, citing ambiguities in how the law defines verification of a ticket’s original price, and confirmed it will pursue an appeal.
The government has indicated that regulatory updates will address these gaps, though no formal announcement has been made. SeatGeek received a $25,000 fine earlier, and both firms argue that digital alterations make enforcement difficult. Despite prior warning letters from the government, tickets continued to be listed above face value on these platforms.
Why it matters
The case tests Ontario’s new consumer-protection law and could shape how online ticket markets operate nationwide.
