The Special Investigation Unit said it is probing the death of a 44-year-old man who died while in custody at the Ontario Provincial Police’s Orillia station. OPP officers responded to a disturbance shortly after 6:45 p.m. on Sunday, arrested three individuals and detained them after searches. On Monday at about 6:30 a.m., a routine check revealed that one of the detainees had no pulse, and resuscitation attempts failed.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene. The SIU has deployed three investigators and a forensic expert to determine how the death occurred. The case highlights the role of the province’s civilian police watchdog in overseeing OPP conduct.
