Ontario Science Centre cuts 31 jobs as it prepares relocation and new hiring

The Ontario Science Centre has dismissed 31 workers, according to a statement from OPSEU Local 549, affecting 27 permanent staff and four contract employees. Ontario's Tourism Ministry spokesperson explained that the centre is undergoing a transition to continue offering science education from a temporary Harbourfront Centre venue and eventually from a new facility at Ontario Place. The ministry expects the restructuring to create about 1,000 new jobs, and indicated that some of those laid off could be considered for the upcoming positions.
The centre was abruptly shut in east Toronto in the summer of 2024 following an engineering assessment that identified roof deficiencies, a rationale that has been questioned given the roof's performance during recent heavy snowfall and rain. A $1-billion science centre is under construction at Ontario Place, slated to open by 2029.
