Open-source AI models prove vital in thwarting cyber threats
Security teams are turning to open-weight AI models, like China's Kimi-K3, after gated frontier models failed to stop recent cyberattacks.
Recent cyber incidents, including a ransomware lockout at a hospital network and a breach of the Hugging Face model hub, exposed the limits of gated frontier AI systems whose safety filters blocked critical analysis. Teams resorted to running an open-weight GLM-5.2 model locally, which managed to isolate the threat, while proprietary models from OpenAI and Anthropic were unable to act. A separate attack on a Coldcard bitcoin wallet, which stole 1,366 bitcoins, was likewise only deciphered by the Chinese open model Kimi-K3, which identified the entropy flaw and tracked the malicious activity.
He stresses that open-source AI, whether American or foreign, can be run on existing hardware and customized for real-world use, making it essential for maintaining U.S. leadership in the AI economy.
Why it matters
Open AI models can be the only effective defense against sophisticated cyber attacks.
