Open-source utility removes roughly 12GB of Apple AI data from macOS
A new command-line tool called RemoveMacAI can disable Apple Intelligence, delete its on-disk models and prevent future downloads, freeing about 12 GB of space.
Developed as an open-source command-line script, RemoveMacAI replicates the functionality of the former Settings toggle that let users disable Apple Intelligence. The tool locates and disables about a dozen individual settings, many hidden under Screen Time, and then removes the AI models that remain on the drive, estimated at around 12 GB. It also adds a safeguard to stop macOS from fetching the models again, though core services like Dictation continue to work.
Users can run a "removemacai revert" command to reactivate the features and allow the models to download anew. A status command reports the size of each model, and some users have observed higher storage usage, with one MacBook Air showing 35.05 GB attributed to Apple Intelligence. The developer claims the modifications persist across macOS updates.
Why it matters
It gives Mac users a way to reclaim storage by removing bundled AI components that Apple no longer lets them disable easily.
