Open Utah 4th District Seat Draws GOP, Democrat, Libertarian and Independent Candidates
Utah’s newly redrawn 4th Congressional District will hold a debate on Oct. 8 as candidates from four parties vie for the open seat left by Rep. Burgess Owens.
Following the November redrawing of Utah’s congressional map, the 4th District now includes Tooele, Millard, Sanpete, Juab and Sevier counties and portions of Salt Lake and Utah counties. Rep. Burgess Owens declared in March that he will not seek another term, leaving the seat open. The field consists of Republican Mike Kennedy, Democrat Jonny Larsen, Libertarian Taylor Wright and independent Steven Burt.
Kennedy, a former family doctor and current 3rd District representative, is running on healthcare and cost-of-living issues. Larsen, a Marine veteran and cancer survivor, emphasizes housing, public-land policy and data-center impacts. The Utah Debate Commission will host a debate between Kennedy and Larsen on Oct. 8 at Snow College.
Why it matters
The race will determine which party controls a newly competitive Utah district after redistricting.
