OpenAI acquires AI camera specialist Glass Imaging in $300 million deal

OpenAI completed a purchase of Glass Imaging, a Los Altos-based firm that applies artificial intelligence to overcome the physical limits of smartphone cameras. The deal, valued at over $300 million, follows the startup’s 2019 launch by ex-Apple engineers Ziv Attar and Tom Bishop, who were instrumental in creating Apple’s Portrait Mode. Glass Imaging’s approach differs from post-capture editing; it trains neural networks on specific camera hardware to deliver superior images at the moment of capture.
Prior to the sale, the company secured roughly $30 million in venture funding. OpenAI declined to comment, though the move dovetails with reports that the ChatGPT maker is exploring its own hardware line, including phones and AI companion devices. The acquisition underscores OpenAI’s broader strategy to integrate its AI capabilities into consumer electronics.
