OpenAI adds college application planner and new study tools to ChatGPT for Teens

OpenAI announced that its ChatGPT for Teens mode will soon include a College Planner feature to track application and financial-aid deadlines, plus updated study utilities like multi-photo PDF creation and flashcard generation.

OpenAI said its ChatGPT for Teens product, launched last August with safety features, will soon incorporate a College Planner designed to help high-school students manage college-application and financial-aid schedules. The planner aggregates each school's requirements, deadlines and tasks into a single view, enabling users to update their status, plan ahead and query the model for explanations. The rollout will first focus on U.S. students in grades 10-12 who plan to attend a four-year institution.

In parallel, OpenAI is enhancing study capabilities: iOS users can now capture many photos in one go to create a PDF, and the system can produce flashcards from uploaded notes. The announcement arrives after Common Sense Media’s report calling the teen version an “unacceptable risk” for facilitating homework without notifying parents. OpenAI claims teen usage averages under 15 minutes per day.

Why it matters

The new tools aim to streamline college applications and study support for teens, addressing safety concerns while adding practical functionality.
