OpenAI adds virtual try-on and favorites tools to ChatGPT shopping suite
OpenAI launched two new ChatGPT features that let users preview clothing on a selfie and bookmark items for later.
OpenAI announced a global rollout of two shopping enhancements for ChatGPT. The first adds a "try on" button that lets users upload a selfie or full-body picture, or even a product screenshot, to see how garments or accessories would appear on them, powered by the new Images 2.5 model with improved lighting and texture rendering. The second feature, called Favorites, creates a Library where users can save product links and associated try-on visuals for future reference.
The updates come as AI assistants explore consumer-facing use cases after a prior instant-checkout idea fell short. Competitors such as Instinct have faced criticism for overly aggressive recommendation tactics, while Google already offers a similar virtual try-on service. OpenAI suggests the new capabilities could also help users search for celebrity outfits or describe desired styles for automated product sourcing.
Why it matters
The tools let shoppers visualize apparel instantly, potentially reshaping how consumers discover and purchase fashion online.
