OpenAI awards $1 million grants to global think tanks for AI impact studies
OpenAI has selected 14 think-tank projects worldwide to receive up to $1 million in funding and model credits for research on AI’s economic and social effects.
OpenAI disclosed the winners of its recent grant competition, earmarking $1 million in cash and up to $1 million in credits for its models to 14 selected think-tank projects. The awardees span several continents, with groups in the United States, Europe, Brazil, Singapore and South Korea receiving support. Among the U.S. recipients are the American Enterprise Institute, the Progressive Policy Institute, the Tax Foundation, the Nuclear Threat Initiative and a joint effort between the conservative AEI and the liberal Urban Institute.
Funding will be used to investigate AI’s impact on the labor market and to design a "person-based benefits system" for the emerging AI economy. Chris Lehane, OpenAI’s chief global affairs officer, emphasized that democracies need bold policy solutions to ensure AI benefits are widely shared. All projects are tasked with promoting economic opportunity and societal resilience in the age of artificial intelligence.
Why it matters
The grants aim to shape policies that could steer AI’s societal and economic effects worldwide.
