OpenAI CEO calls AI water-use concerns a baseless meme
OpenAI chief Sam Altman dismissed worries that AI data centers consume excessive water, saying modern facilities use about as much as an office building.
On the premiere episode of the Sources podcast, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman labeled criticism of AI data centers’ water consumption a "meme" lacking factual support. He pointed to a 2024 Virginia state commission study showing that while some facilities use more water, the majority consume the same amount or less than a typical large office building. Altman referenced a Gallup poll indicating widespread public opposition to data center construction, with water impact mentioned by a minority of respondents.
He compared AI’s water footprint to California almond production, stating that growing one almond uses several liters versus roughly 0.32 milliliters per ChatGPT query. One outlet could not independently verify the almond comparison, but existing figures align with Altman's claim. He concluded that the industry needs to deliver clear value and adopt efficient water practices to win public trust.
