OpenAI launches ChatGPT ads in Singapore, eyeing larger Southeast Asian markets
OpenAI has begun displaying advertisements to ChatGPT users in Singapore and five other Southeast Asian regions, while analysts say Indonesia and Vietnam could provide greater scale.
OpenAI started serving ads within ChatGPT on September 24, covering Singapore, five other Southeast Asian markets and Taiwan, reaching both free-tier users and those on the S$11-per-month Go plan. Li Jianggan of Momentum Works says Singapore’s high purchasing power makes it a premium per-user advertising market, yet this also means many users may opt for paid subscriptions, shrinking the ad-eligible audience. Indonesia and Vietnam, with AI penetration rates of 14.8% and 27.9% respectively, have far larger populations, presenting OpenAI with a substantial scale opportunity.
Local experts caution that while Southeast Asian consumers are tech-savvy, the presence of ads in a trusted conversational interface could erode confidence in AI answers. OpenAI assures ads will be clearly labelled and will not affect response generation. The move reflects broader pressure on AI firms to monetize free users, with OpenAI projecting $2.5 billion in ad revenue this year and aiming for $100 billion by 2030.
