OpenAI launches Computer History, a key-logging tool for ChatGPT memory building

OpenAI’s latest addition, called Computer History, lets opt-in macOS users capture low-level interaction data—including clicks, keystrokes, shortcuts and app switches—to build a chronological record of activity. The raw events are kept locally for a maximum of 48 hours, then processed into text summaries that become ChatGPT memories, which are uploaded to OpenAI’s servers and may persist for future interactions. The tool is offered to ChatGPT Pro, Business and Enterprise desktop customers, requires manual activation for Pro accounts and admin approval for Business and Enterprise, and is not currently available in the European Economic Area, Switzerland or the United Kingdom.

OpenAI cautions users to turn the feature off when communicating with others without consent and to exclude apps handling health, financial or personal data. Although the service incurs extra token usage and widens the risk of prompt-injection from malicious web content, it deliberately avoids capturing screenshots, microphone input, system audio or private-mode browsing.
