OpenAI links ChatGPT Health to Epic EHR, adding public-data plugin for clinicians

OpenAI announced that ChatGPT Health will be tied into Epic’s electronic health-record platform, which stores data for more than 325 million patients, permitting clinicians to import records and ask the AI questions. The integration provides read-only access to items like appointment notes, laboratory results, medication histories and specialist documentation, and can be embedded within EHR workflows for tasks such as pre-visit review and clinical timeline creation without exiting the patient chart.

A new Healthcare Public Data plugin will retrieve information from ClinicalTrials.gov, CMS Coverage, RxNorm, DailyMed and PubMed to help providers synthesize trial eligibility, drug identifiers, coverage policies and provider records. OpenAI said entities with a Business Associate Agreement may employ ChatGPT Work, Codex, apps and connectors in compliant environments. The firm reported that testing across 27 clinical use cases yielded 99.1 % safe responses from more than 4,300 physician inputs, though it acknowledged recent lawsuits alleging dangerous recommendations. Despite the expanded capabilities, OpenAI maintains that the AI is not intended for diagnosis or treatment decisions.
