OpenAI releases a preview ChatGPT desktop client for Linux users
OpenAI has introduced a preview version of a native ChatGPT desktop application for Linux, supporting several major distributions worldwide.
OpenAI unveiled a preview desktop app for Linux, extending its ChatGPT and Codex services to the platform after strong community demand. The software will run on Ubuntu 24.04 and 26.04 LTS, Debian 13, and Fedora versions 43 and 44, and is expected to be compatible with derivative distributions built on these bases. Users will be able to access the standard ChatGPT interface, the ChatGPT Work suite, and the Codex coding assistant from their Linux desktops.
The launch is being made worldwide as of Tuesday. OpenAI noted that Linux was among the most-requested operating systems for the desktop client. This follows Anthropic's recent introduction of a Claude desktop app for Ubuntu 22.04+ and Debian 12+.
