OpenAI releases hundreds of AI-generated math papers, prompting Fields Medalist alarm
OpenAI posted over 719 AI-written manuscripts covering 372 problem families, including 16 topics that concern Fields Medalist Hugo Duminil-Copin, who said the work threatens his research area.
At a video conference organized by the Société mathématique de France, Hugo Duminil-Copin, the 2022 Fields Medal recipient, revealed that he had been moved to tears after learning that OpenAI had released a massive set of AI-generated manuscripts. The repository contains more than 719 papers grouped into 372 families, each purporting to resolve open mathematical questions, and 16 of those directly intersect with Duminil-Copin’s research interests.
He characterized the development as destroying his domain of study and displayed a computer-generated illustration of a rabbit being run over to dramatize the perceived threat. This disclosure comes after earlier claims that OpenAI’s models solved the Navier-Stokes problem, a prize-winning challenge. Duminil-Copin noted that the situation has caused a sense of dismantling within the mathematical community, which has been grappling with the rapid advance of AI in research.
Why it matters
AI-generated proofs could reshape mathematical research, raising concerns about originality and the future of the field.
