OpenAI tests $8 option to instantly reset ChatGPT Plus usage limits
A hidden $8 button allowing ChatGPT Plus users to instantly reset their weekly quota has been spotted, confirming OpenAI’s trial of a pay-to-reset feature.
A Reddit one outlet revealed that some ChatGPT Plus subscribers encountered a black button offering an $8 payment to instantly restore their weekly usage quota after it had been exhausted. This pay-to-reset mechanism was not announced beforehand and appears to supplement OpenAI’s earlier banked Codex resets introduced in June, which included free and referral-earned resets. According to an OpenAI spokesperson, the company is testing options for users to buy additional usage as part of its effort to make its tools more accessible.
The $8 reset could represent a notable saving compared with professional plans that may cost $25 to $50 per one outlet. OpenAI has recently been generous with free usage limits and promotions, a strategy intended to boost adoption and compete with Anthropic, which offers its own credits and expanded limits. Recent exchanges between OpenAI’s Thibault Sottiaux and Anthropic’s Boris Cherny highlighted the competitive dynamics in the AI coding space.
