OpenAI to roll out advertising on free and Go ChatGPT tiers in India
OpenAI announced that ads will appear on its free and Go subscription versions of ChatGPT for users in India.
OpenAI said it will begin displaying advertisements to users of its ChatGPT Free and Go tiers in India, initially featuring 50 brands through collaborations with WPP and Omnicom. A new ad manager platform is slated for release next month, allowing marketers to run campaigns with a minimum daily budget of ₹725. Dave Dugan, head of global ads solutions at OpenAI, highlighted that the format lets businesses reach users at decision-making moments.
The company has previously introduced ads to U.S. users and expanded the program to Europe this month. This initiative is part of OpenAI’s effort to diversify revenue as it prepares for a potential IPO, after reporting $6.7 billion in revenue for the quarter ending June 2026. The firm has long targeted the Indian market, offering low-cost plans and promotional offers to grow its user base.
Why it matters
The ad rollout creates a new revenue stream for OpenAI and introduces paid content to millions of Indian ChatGPT users.
