OpenAI to trial visual ads alongside ChatGPT image generation in the US
OpenAI will begin testing image-based advertisements that appear when users create pictures with ChatGPT, starting later this month in the United States.
OpenAI announced a pilot of a visual advertising format that will place sponsored product images on the screen when users generate images with ChatGPT. These ads will appear distinct from the generated content and are designed not to influence the chatbot's answers. The rollout begins later this month for users in the United States, but will be blocked for those subscribed to the Plus, Pro, or Enterprise plans.
OpenAI highlighted guardrails intended to prevent ads from appearing in contexts deemed emotionally vulnerable, sensitive, or otherwise unsuitable. An initial cohort of advertisers will test the format, and the company intends to experiment with further ad variations in the future.
Why it matters
The move introduces a new revenue stream for OpenAI while affecting the free user experience of a widely used AI tool.
