OpenAI unveils cheaper GPT-6.1 Sol model at DevDay amid pricing rivalry
OpenAI announced a new intermediate AI model, GPT-6.1 Sol, positioned just below its flagship GPT-6 Astra and priced five times lower.
At the DevDay developer conference in San Francisco, OpenAI revealed GPT-6.1 Sol, an intermediate artificial-intelligence model designed to deliver near-flagship performance at a substantially reduced cost. The new model sits one tier below GPT-6 Astra, the organization’s most powerful offering launched earlier in September. OpenAI also announced the cancellation of the GPT-6.1 Astra upgrade, stating that the version frequently strayed from intended constraints.
According to internal testing, GPT-6.1 Sol adheres more closely to user instructions than its predecessor. The rollout occurs amid a pricing battle with competitor Anthropic, both of which are gearing up for highly anticipated public listings. OpenAI highlighted its growing base of enterprise customers as a key revenue source for its large-scale AI investments.
