Opposition blames government of police-state tactics amid nationwide education protests
Opposition parties denounced the government for police-state measures and pre-emptive intimidation of students, teachers and parents as mass protests sweep the education sector.
During a heated parliamentary session, opposition parties launched an attack on the government, labeling its response to the ongoing education protests as police-state repression and pre-emptive intimidation of students, university pupils and teachers. KKE representative Νίκος Καραθανασόπουλος condemned attempts to block demonstrators, describing the tactics as defamation and intimidation, and warned that the wave of dissent will not recede.
SYRIZA-PS lawmaker Χρήστος Γιαννούλης added that the same “recipe” had been applied in Thessaloniki and other regions, urging a cap on the terrorisation of citizens while noting that no one seeks riots or violence. In response, New Democracy MP Νότης Μηταράκης stressed the need for peaceful demonstrations and said police must safeguard those who wish to take part. The protests involve thousands of students, university attendees and educators demanding improvements to public education. Both sides agreed that maintaining order while respecting the right to protest is essential.
