Opposition coalition condemns emergency rule and removal of KP government

A joint opposition meeting in Islamabad demanded the immediate end of emergency and governor’s rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and called for respect of the province’s elected mandate.

Opposition parties convened in Islamabad on Tuesday, issuing a statement that demanded the swift withdrawal of emergency and governor’s rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the restoration of the province’s democratic mandate. Chaired by Mehmood Khan Achakzai, the meeting featured senior figures such as Allama Raja Nasir Abbas, Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, Maulana Fazlur Rehman, and Salman Akram Raja, who condemned the removal of the elected government and the arrest of leaders like Chief Minister Sohail Afridi.

The participants called for safeguarding the constitutional rights of the detained politicians and stressed the need for equal treatment of provinces, criticizing what they described as double standards between Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan. They praised Fazlur Rehman’s dialogue efforts and urged the federal government to develop a comprehensive, inclusive anti-terrorism strategy. The statement warned that unilateral dissolutions of elected bodies undermine democratic values and called for resources to be allocated to the province to address security challenges.

Why it matters

The opposition’s protest signals heightened political tension over federal interference in provincial governance.
