Opposition launches month-long ‘Georgia Without Ivanishvili’ protests ahead of court case

Opposition groups marched in Tbilisi under the slogan “Georgia Without Ivanishvili,” kicking off a campaign that will run until 28 November.

On Sunday, opposition parties organized a march in Tbilisi, moving from the university campus to Rustaveli Square with the chant “Georgia Without Ivanishvili, Georgia Deserves Better.” The demonstration marks the launch of a protest series that will continue until 28 November, the anniversary of Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze’s announcement to suspend the country’s EU integration process until 2028. That decision previously triggered large-scale protests, clashes and arrests.

Speakers such as Nika Gvaramia of the Coalition for Change and Tamar Chergoleishvili of the Federalists denounced Bidzan Ivanishvili’s influence and called the move a sign of his waning legitimacy. Freedom Square leader Levan Tsutskiridze appealed for broader support of political parties, emphasizing the need for organized opposition. The rally occurs as the Constitutional Court in Batumi reviews a petition by 88 Georgian Dream MPs seeking to ban opposition parties. The opposition alliance, formed in March 2026, includes nine parties: Ahali, Girchi - More Freedom, Droa, United National Movement, Strategy Aghmashenebeli, Freedom Square, Federalists, European Georgia and the National Democratic Party.

Why it matters

The protests signal growing resistance to the ruling party’s attempts to limit opposition ahead of crucial elections.
