Opposition-leaning ‘Neue Menschen’ dominates Russian embassy elections in Vienna and Salzburg

The Russian diplomatic missions in Vienna and Salzburg held elections on Sunday, and the Central Election Commission published the final tallies on Monday. The conditionally liberal party Neue Menschen emerged as the clear winner in both cities, followed by the Communist Party of the Russian Federation, while the Kremlin-linked United Russia came in third. Earlier, activists close to the opposition had carried out a poll that suggested a similar ordering, noting minimal backing for United Russia.

The voting took place under a strong security presence, including uniformed police, armed officers, and explosive-detection dogs, with parts of the surrounding streets closed to traffic. No public rally was organized, and the authorities complied with the Russian embassy’s security requests. The outcome highlights the limited appeal of the Kremlin-endorsed party among Russian expatriates in Austria.
