Opposition parties launch no-confidence vote against Prime Minister Kristen Michal's government

The Center Party, Isamaa and EKRE have filed a no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Kristen Michal's minority cabinet, accusing it of scandals and policy failures.

Center Party, Isamaa and EKRE submitted a no-confidence motion targeting Prime Minister Kristen Michal's minority government, arguing that constant scandals have damaged public confidence. They reference a Government Office poll indicating that a majority of Estonians feel financially insecure and are worried about rising everyday expenses, urging the government to cut fuel and food prices and lower taxes. The opposition also condemns planned tax increases slated for after the 2027 elections, as well as defence procurement scandals and the government's disregard for the Estonian Defence Forces' advice on drone defence.

Additional criticism targets the finance, climate and economy, social affairs, and education ministers for perceived mismanagement. As of Wednesday morning, 33 members of the Riigikogu have signed the motion, and the initiators have invited the Social Democrats to add their support.

Why it matters

A successful vote could topple Estonia's current government and reshape its policy direction.
