Opposition press chief Claudia Macero returns to Venezuela after exile
Claudia Macero, the communications head for opposition leader María Corina Machado, flew back to Venezuela after nearly two years abroad, saying she wants to inspire confidence.
Claudia Macero, 34, who leads communications for María Corina Machado’s opposition movement, landed at Simón Bolívar International Airport in Maiquetía, marking her return after leaving Venezuela in early 2025. She told reporters the trip is meant to restore confidence in herself and the cause, emphasizing that others have paved the way for her. Hundreds gathered to welcome her, and party officials from Vente Venezuela embraced her on arrival.
Macero said the choice to return was a personal one, following accusations of conspiracy and treason that forced her and five colleagues to seek refuge in the Argentine embassy in March 2024. The party’s national coordinator, Henry Alviárez, indicated that Machado’s own return is expected soon, despite opposition claims that the government has thwarted seven attempts since December. Government negotiator Jorge Rodríguez denied any obstruction, while recent earthquakes and a closed commercial airspace have added to tensions surrounding the opposition’s movements.
