Opposition presses government for tighter oversight of religious community funding

The Conservative Party has summoned Minister Lene Vågslid to demand answers on how public money is allocated to religious and belief groups, citing concerns over inadequate control.

In a parliamentary interpellation, Conservative representative Haagen Poppe asked Minister Lene Vågslid if the government lacks effective oversight of public grants to religious and belief organizations, warning that this could erode confidence in the scheme. The demand comes after a newspaper revealed cases where people were enrolled in such groups without their knowledge. Vågslid responded that the administration is examining both the regulatory framework and the monitoring regime, and that any improperly received subsidies would be reclaimed.

Poppe emphasized that, given the sizable public resources devoted to these groups, a basic verification of membership should be mandatory. The opposition seeks clearer accountability and tighter controls to prevent misuse of state funds. The issue highlights ongoing debate over the allocation of public money to faith-based entities.
